A new name on the door.

A new name on the door: launching JD Sports where Finish Line stood

A rebrand is a launch that happens one door at a time. What JD's own plans asked for, and how we filmed the openings through the change.

Finish Line became JD Sports. For shoppers, that change happens in one moment: they walk up to a store they know and see a new name on the door. For the brand, it is a launch that happens one door at a time, and every door needs its own day.

The plan starts 45 days out

JD's own store plans set the timing. Communication about the rebrand starts 45 days before each store changes over, with a first phase that introduces the JD brand. By the time the new sign goes up, the neighborhood has already heard the name.

That timing matters for anyone filming it. A rebrand opening is not a surprise. People arrive knowing what they came to see, and opening day is the payoff of weeks of build up. The opening film is not the first thing people see. It is the last chapter of a story the brand has been telling for weeks.

Three doors, one date

On 16 November 2024, three JD Sports stores opened on the same date: Chestnut Street in Philadelphia, Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica and Hylan Blvd on Staten Island. Three cities, three crowds, one standard. We filmed the openings through the change, and Chestnut Street had its grand opening event a week later, on 23 November.

What changes when the name changes

A rebrand opening has two jobs. It has to say the new name clearly, and it has to tell regulars the store is still theirs. We look for frames that do both: the new sign over a street people know, and the locals who show up for it. Get that balance right and the opening feels like a welcome, not a takeover.

  • The sign: the new name, clear, on its street
  • The neighborhood: the people who already shopped here
  • The store: the new space, before and after the doors open
  • The day: the line, the peak and the city walking in

Film the change

A rebrand gives a brand something an ordinary opening does not: a before and an after. The old storefront, the new sign and the first customers under the new name tell a story in three frames. Plan to capture the change itself, and the opening film has a reason to exist beyond the day.

One standard, every door

Across two years of store launches and activations for JD Sports, the rule stayed the same: every door opens like a launch. That consistency adds up to 354 films delivered for JD Sports since 2023.

If you are planning a rebrand

  • Start talking 45 days out, the way JD's plans do.
  • Treat each location as its own launch, with its own day.
  • Show the new name and the old neighborhood in the same frame.
  • Keep one standard in every city, so the brand reads as one.
  • Cut for your channels while the opening is still news.
